Willows, Aspens, and Little Breezes

Willows whiten, aspens quiver,

Little breezes dusk and shiver.

– Alfred, Lord Tennyson, “The Lady of Shalott”

Sun and Shadow

“Turn your face toward the sun and the shadows will fall behind you.”

– Maori Proverb –

(I’m posting a day late, which I don’t usually do. I was in a full-day art class, totally enjoying myself to the point of forgetting all else! Evidence below. I’ll try to be on schedule for the next post!)

The Presence of Everything

“Silence is not the absence of something but the presence of everything.”

– acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton

We need silence, the space between thoughts, between steps, between notes, between words, between day and night. If you have time, click on the link to Gordon Hempton and listen to his recordings of the sounds of silence.

The Wind is Polished

“Already it is October, and the wind blows strong to the sea

from the hills where snow must have fallen, the wind is polished with snow.”

D.H. Lawrence, “Butterfly”

At last cooler weather has come to my part of the world. I fill my lungs with calm air carrying the scent of wood smoke. I inhale a cold, sharp, snow-polished breeze. I breathe gusts of wind that rush and whirl and billow, shaking loose the shivering gold and red leaves, sweeping away the season past, and whispering sharp, clean hope for the season to come.

Lighting Up Our Whole Lives

“One day the sun shall . . . perchance

shine into our minds and hearts,

and light up our whole lives

with a great awakening light,

as warm and serene and golden

as on a bankside in autumn.”

Henry David Thoreau

Sounds of Peace

Old Pond

Frogs jumped in

Sound of water.

– Basho –

(translator, Lafcadio Hearn)

Pause.

Shoulders and hands relax.

Listen.

Listen past the noise

to sounds of wind, water,

bugs, birdsong,

church bell, distant train,

your own deep breath

drifting in and out.

Listen to sounds of peace.

Calm your soul.

Nurture peace. Cultivate kindness. Carry the calm.

Seeds Come Flying

“Arching grasses come one by one;

seeds come flying on downy wings,

silent as fate,

to give life’s dearest beauty for the ashes of art;

and strong evergreen arms

laden with ferns and tillandsia drapery

are spread over all –

Life at work everywhere.”

John Muir
