Hello, Spring!

Oh, Spring is surely coming,

Her couriers fill the air;

Each morn are new arrivals,

Each night her ways prepare;

I scent her fragrant garments,

Her foot is on the stair.

– John Burroughs

Wishing you a Happy Spring!

Nurture peace, cultivate kindness, and carry the calm.

The Lure of the Distant

“Look underfoot. . . The lure of the distant and the difficult is deceptive. The great opportunity is where you are. Don’t despise your own place and hour. Every place is the center of the world.” – John Burroughs

Nurture peace, cultivate kindness, and carry the calm.

One of the Hardest Lessons

“One of the hardest lessons we have to learn in this life, and one that many persons never learn, is to see the divine, the celestial, the pure, in the common, the near at hand—to see that heaven lies about us here in this world.” – John Burroughs

Real Gold

“For anything worth having one must pay the price;

and the price is always work, patience, love, self-sacrifice –

no paper currency, no promises to pay,

but the gold of real service.”

John Burroughs

As a Bee to a Flower

“I go to books and to nature as a bee goes to the flower,

for a nectar that I can make into my own honey.”

John Burroughs

Here’s hoping that you find ways to make honey of your life and that others will taste its sweetness.

Nurture peace. Cultivate kindness. Carry the calm.

expression cannot paint

And her endless bloom.”

James Thomson

“I go to nature to be soothed and healed,

and to have my senses put in order.”

If You Want to See Birds

“If you want to see birds, you must have birds in your heart.”

John Burroughs

I think, too, that if we want to see peace, we must have peace in our hearts. If we want to see kindness, we must have kindness in our hearts. If we want to find calm, we must carry it within.

Nurture peace. Cultivate kindness. Carry the calm.

Nature of the week – A bluebird visited this week, which is a rare event. I barely got a picture of him before he flew away. Yesterday, he and his mate returned carrying grassy twigs and made themselves at home!

The Walk to Take Today

“The place to observe nature is where you are:

the walk to take to-day is the walk you took yesterday.

You will not find just the same things.”

John Burroughs

This is sometimes quoted as, “To learn something new, take the path that you took yesterday.”

Nurture peace. Cultivate kindness. Carry the calm.
